Ballin’ in the Park is more than just a sports event—it’s a movement to bring youth back to the parks, restore a sense of community, and inspire the next generation through the power of play. Created as a response to the fading presence of kids playing outside, this initiative provides a safe, structured, and engaging environment where young athletes can develop their skills, build confidence, and form lasting connections.

For six years, Ballin’ in the Park transformed an underutilized playground into a vibrant gathering space every Sunday in August. The event featured:

  • Basketball games & skill challenges led by community volunteers (former athletes) and experienced coaches.
  • Soccer clinics designed to introduce young players to the sport.
  • Community-building activities that emphasized leadership, friendship, and positive social interactions.
  • Family-friendly entertainment, music, and refreshments to create an inviting atmosphere for all ages.

At its core, Ballin’ in the Park is about reviving the joy of outdoor play, strengthening community ties, and ensuring that every child has access to the benefits of sports and mentorship.

Give a child a ball and a park, and they’ll gain more than just a game; they’ll develop resilience, friendships, and the skills to navigate life.

Why It Was Created

The inspiration for Ballin’ in the Park comes from Coach Audrey Taylor’s own childhood experiences. Growing up, some of her most cherished memories were made at “the alley,” a park across the street from her grandmother’s house. It wasn’t just a playground—it was a village, a place where families gathered, friendships formed, and lessons were learned through the game of basketball.

Over time, she noticed that these spaces, once full of life, were now quiet and empty. Kids were spending less time outdoors, missing out on the same experiences that shaped her youth. Determined to make a change, she launched Ballin’ in the Park to bring that sense of community, connection, and play back to the next generation.

Why It Matters

In today’s world, where screens often replace outdoor play, the need for positive, in-person engagement is greater than ever. Ballin’ in the Park helps:

Reignite a love for sports and outdoor activity.
Provide free, structured play opportunities for kids of all ages.
Foster leadership, confidence, and teamwork through mentorship.
Revitalize community spaces and strengthen family connections.

The event has made a lasting impact by reminding kids that the relationships built through sports extend far beyond the game. It’s about more than basketball—it’s about belonging.
